Why insurance claims get underpaid, and what you can do about it

A settlement letter arrives. The claim has been approved, which feels like the hard part is over. Then the figure lands, and it doesn’t come close to covering the repair quotes sitting on the kitchen table.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not imagining it. Underpaid settlements happen far more often than most policyholders expect, and the first offer an insurer makes is rarely the last word on what you’re entitled to.

Why the numbers don’t add up

Insurers process a high volume of claims, and several patterns show up again and again in the properties we deal with across Essex, London and East Anglia.

The scope of work gets underestimated. Early assessments often miss what a leak or a fire has actually done to a building. Damp spreading behind plasterboard rarely shows up on day one. Neither does the cost of skips, professional fees, or the secondary damage that only reveals itself weeks later. None of it was visible on the first visit, so none of it made the first estimate.

Repair costs get based on the cheapest option available. Settlements are frequently calculated using a preferred contractor’s rate card or a standardised pricing model rather than what it will actually cost to get the work done properly in your area.

Items go missing from the claim. This shows up constantly in contents claims and business interruption cases, where a full inventory takes time to compile and something almost always gets left off the first pass.

Policy wording gets interpreted narrowly. Cover that should apply gets read in the insurer’s favour when the wording leaves room for more than one interpretation.

Signs your claim may be underpaid

A few warning signs are worth watching for:

  • The settlement wouldn’t cover a full repair or replacement at today’s prices
  • Independent quotes you’ve gathered come in higher than the insurer’s figure
  • You’re being pushed to accept an offer quickly
  • Parts of the original claim were never addressed in the final settlement

None of these guarantee the offer is wrong. Together, they’re usually enough reason to ask more questions before signing anything.

What to do if something feels off

Don’t accept the first offer straight away. Once you’ve signed off on a settlement, reopening it becomes much harder, so it’s worth pausing even when the pressure is on to move quickly.

Ask the insurer for a full breakdown of the offer. You want the costings, the assumptions behind them, and the scope of works they’ve priced against, in writing. A vague settlement letter is often the first sign that corners were cut somewhere in the assessment.

Get an independent quote from a contractor you trust. Comparing it against the insurer’s figure gives you something concrete to challenge the offer with, rather than a general feeling that it’s too low.

Where a loss assessor fits in

This is where our team at Your Claim usually gets involved. We go through the settlement offer line by line, work out what’s been missed or underpriced, and deal with the insurer directly on your behalf. Most people don’t have the time or the appetite for that conversation while they’re also trying to get their home or business back to normal, and that’s exactly the part we take off their hands.

Common questions

Can I challenge an insurance settlement offer?

Yes. Plenty of policyholders do this successfully, particularly once they have independent evidence to back up the challenge.

Will challenging the offer delay my claim?

It can add a little time, but the improvement in the final settlement usually makes that worthwhile.

Final thought

If a settlement doesn’t sit right with you, trust that instinct. A second opinion from someone who deals with insurers every day can make a real difference to what you end up with.
